Suggested Countries for British Students to Work

There is no better time for students and recent graduates to work abroad. While the United Kingdom remains a part of the European Union, you can take advantage of the free movement of people. The EU is not the only desirable place for students; the following countries attract a large number of British ex-pats every year.

Germany

Germany is and has been for many years, one of the top destinations for ex-pat workers. It’s presently the fourth largest economy in the world with a strong technology industry. When the UK leaves the European Union, it’s likely to be the top destination for top graduates and students wishing (and able) to live, study and work abroad. It offers low fees (which may change) and tuition is low. The industrial powerhouses of Frankfurt and Munich are presently a big draw for expats.

Austria

Austria has one of the lowest unemployment rates anywhere in Europe. However, that is not the only draw for ex-pat workers and students. Foreign workers report a much higher work-life balance. It’s also a country where English is widely spoken – arguably more so than in Germany. Ex-pats felt they had a better experience learning German as a second language in Austria than they would have done in Germany.

Switzerland

Not always top of everybody’s list, it deserves more attention than it gets. Switzerland is not a part of the European Union but it is a member of the EEA. Should the UK remain in what is called “The Single Market”, it should be relatively easy for students and graduates to live and work in a country with high wages and low taxes. It’s received praise for its work-life balance and work culture. Switzerland particularly welcomes graduates in engineering, construction, IT and pharmaceuticals.

Singapore

This is one destination in the Far East that has attracted British ex-pats for decades, though usually military personnel. Now, it is a shining beacon of affluence welcoming foreigners from all over the world. While it is to your advantage to learn Malay, Mandarin or Tamil, it can create a bit of a headache to speak all three. You’ll be pleased to know that the official language of Singapore is English. It has a great work culture built on technology and a vibrant leisure scene.

Australia

The land “Down Under” has been a big draw for British ex-pats for years even with their complex points based system. Salaries are higher but so is the cost of living. Students and recent graduates should carefully consider whether it would be financially viable for them to move. Those who do, report a good quality of life, high employment and a great work-life balance. With a strong investment in technology, engineers and science graduates are particularly welcome.
