Five Reasons to “Go Solar”

Many UK households have taken up solar panelling over the last few years; activists and proponents of renewable energy will say it is not enough and more should be done to reduce our carbon emissions and all do our bit to help the environment. You may have considered installing solar panelling in your student housing but were put off by the outward cost. Yet for the shrewd landlord, there are advantages and reasons to go solar.

Solar Saves You Money

Installing solar panelling may cost you initially (though thanks to bursaries and general cost reduction they are cheaper than ever before) but in the long run, you will save money and help the environment. One of the main reasons to go solar in this case is that you will pass those savings onto your student tenants and this can be a unique selling point when new groups come to view. Fuel costs fluctuate, not so when you have solar panel installed.

Adds Value to the Property

Because it is still relatively rare for houses to install, you can add a not so small percentage onto the value of the property should you choose to sell it in the near future. We are all looking to increase the value of our property to make maximum profit from it; modernising is one of them. Modernising is most certainly one of your best ways to go solar.

Low Maintenance

One of the main reasons to go solar other than immediate costs savings and lower carbon emissions is that they require a lot less maintenance than conventional electricity and heating systems. They have no moving parts – unlike your boiler – and require only minimal checking for servicing. So long as they are kept clean and are looked after (which they should be as they are on the roof) they should give you very little problem.

Subsidies are Available

The initial outward cost can be offset; there are still a number of government subsidies and bursaries available for green home improvements that will help you reduce your carbon emissions and save you money. Most of these schemes are ongoing and as a landlord, you are not exempt from applying. This will also be a good time to look at your insulation as well as your reasons to go solar

Feed In Tariff

As well as the government bursaries, you can actually earn money from using solar panelling. What better reason to go solar than that somebody will pay you for using them? You will get tax relief for installing any renewable energy type and you will also be paid for any electricity you feed back into the national grid. This way, you can keep your costs down and become an attractive property for your students.
