What NOT to Bring to Student Accommodation

What not to bring to student accommodation

When moving away from home for the first time, many students try to take everything with them, including the kitchen sink. This means that they do not forget to bring something with them, but it does mean it leaves them with very little space to live and in some student accommodation certain items can break Tenancy Agreement conditions. Neither a Landlord nor a Student should break a Tenancy Agreement so read it well and abide by it. We at www.padsforstudents.co.uk have decided to make a list of the most commonly banned items that students bring to student accommodation even though they shouldn’t. Read it make sure you don’t pack any if they are against your Tenancy Agreement, read yours to double check; ignorance is not a good enough excuse.

DO NOT BRING:

Fairy Lights & Candles:

A favourite among students, not only around Christmas time either. Commonly used to brighten up a dull room they are normally found in a room belonging to female students, although numerous guys will have a few stored, be it for a blackout or mood lighting. Fundamentally they are banned from Student Halls as they pose a huge fire risk. The first thought you are thinking is, a candle obviously is a fire risk, but how are fairy lights. Simple, they get too hot and explode, which eventually means broken glass and a fiery death. We are not fond of these consequences so don’t bring them to student accommodation, in addition to this advice, most if not all halls ban them.

Weapons:

Be it a decorative battle-axe or a small tactical thermonuclear weapon, don’t bring them to your student accommodation, halls and landlords don’t appreciate visits from scared tenants, and nor will you.  Keep them safe and at home, away from the potential of drunken accidents that have the soundtrack of, “Look what I can do,” followed by a scream of agony. It should also be said that this is especially true of illegal weapons.

Every Kitchen Utensil you can imagine:

Bringing enough cutlery, plates and pans is important. However bringing enough pots and pans to make Gordon Ramsey blush is not going to win you over with your housemates, mainly due to there being very little space left for a saucer. Exotic kitchenware is generally not required unless you really intend to use it, a lot, for example don’t bring your cordless warming tray, cherry chomper or food evaporator. Yes they are all real kitchen gadgets. As a rule before you decide to bring any appliance double check what your student accommodation supplies.

Top Tip - DON’T BBQ indoors, please BBQ outside in an appropriate BBQ friendly area.

This is a Food Evaporator

Heaters:

Although it might get cold in winter most student halls are very warm and a heater is unnecessary. However the major reason for them being banned is just like candles and fairy lights; they have a high probability that they could cause a fire, and as previously discussed we know the consequences of fire. There are a two types of heater that you should never bring at all: Gas heaters and parafin heaters, these are huge fire hazards.

Pets:

This applies to all pets, from Spot the Dog, to Frisky the Cat all the way to Bob the Fish. Although this might seem harsh it is a catch all rule designed to ensure fairness for all students, and so that some crafty student who wants to try to bend the rules to get their exotic pet that is not on a list of banned pets into student accommodation while a hamster is banned. In addition they can smell or make loud noises which can disrupt all your housemates.

Drugs:

Medicine is obviously allowed, but as you can imagine having illegal substances on your person when at Halls or student accommodation is frowned upon. They generally have stronger opinions than frowned upon; after all they are illegal drugs.

Television:

Don’t bring a television if you aren’t going to pay a TV license. TV Licensing is very aware about students not paying for TV Licenses and have been known to search, detect and fine those without licenses. If you do bring a TV it is highly advised you pay the license. Also do not expect your new housemates to accept a share of the cost of a TV License as they would not be expecting such an expense, nor asked for it. You could maybe discuss it with them as they will no doubt use it at some point, but do not expect them to just pay up.

Check your tenancy Agreement for all the banned items in your Student Accommodation
