Durham is a city sandwiched north of Darlington, south of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in North East England (why I man). This location is sought after by both students and tourists alike and is famous for its well-known national heritage sites including its Normal Cathedral and 11th century castle as well as the reputable University of Durham (Durham University).
There is history and heritage to be explored and enjoyed throughout the city with things to see and do for everyone – the Botanic Gardens however are something everyone should experience. As well as the many historic sites there are museums, gardens and galleries galore.
Things to do for students in Durham
As well as the history and heritage sites of Durham you can also enjoy all the mod cons and attractions of the city too. Fury Events is an outdoor activity centre offering quad biking, shooting and archery but to name a few with mid-week student offers. If this gives you a taste for the adrenalin pumping sports you could always take it that step further and go for the bucket list expeience of parachuting at the Peterlee Parachute Centre.
Durham University and Durham student accommodation
Durham University (officially The university of Durham) is the 3rd oldest university in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge and similarly shares an international reputation for excellence. It is consistently ranked within the top 10 universities in the UK (usually placing around 5th or 6th) and is part of the Russell group – it is safe to say its graduates are somewhat sought after.
The university has a total of 16 colleges spread across 2 sites; Durham city having 14 and the other two being part of the Queens Campus in Thornaby-on-Tees, Stockton. There is a free bus service between the two services which runs frequently throughout the week (45 min journey)but we do suggest you find out which campus it is you will be based at before deciding on your Durham student accommodation.
The university does offer on-campus accommodation where you will be living with others from the college you will be a part of throughout your studies. Some see this as a positive as you would be sharing with people who have similar interests however befriending and living with people with people from other colleges may be more for you and as far as we are aware it’s not like a Griyffindor bunking with a Slytherin. Although we think this university is definitely the closest to Hogwarts you’re going to get… it’s in a castle!
